Documents that foreigners must carry when participating in traffic in Vietnam

According to regulations, foreign drivers and motor vehicles participating in traffic in Vietnam must have a vehicle going ahead to guide traffic. The vehicle guiding traffic is a car (if the tourist drives a car) or a motorbike (if the tourist drives a car) arranged by a Vietnamese international travel service business and must be attached with a logo or flag with the symbol of that business.

Foreign drivers and motor vehicles participating in traffic in Vietnam are only allowed to participate in traffic on routes within the administrative boundaries of the province and the time of circulation in Vietnam's territory is in accordance with the regulations in the approval document of the Ministry of Public Security.

When driving a foreign motor vehicle participating in traffic, the driver must comply with the provisions of the law on road traffic in Vietnam; Bring and present the following documents when requested by the competent authority:

- Passport or valid international travel documents, documents related to residence in Vietnam;

- Driving license issued by a foreign country appropriate to the type of vehicle being driven and still valid;

- Certificate of technical safety and environmental protection inspection for motor vehicles or equivalent documents issued by a competent authority of the country where the vehicle is registered and still valid (for cars);

- Vehicle registration certificate issued by a competent authority of the country where the vehicle is registered and still valid; Customs declaration of temporarily imported and re-exported road vehicles.

- Certificate of civil liability insurance of the owner of the motor vehicle valid in Vietnam.

Decree No. 30/2024/ND-CP clearly states that foreign motor vehicle drivers who violate the provisions of Vietnamese law and international treaties to which the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a member shall be handled in accordance with the provisions of relevant laws.
